Decked out in multiple layers of clothes, mittens and snow boots, Goshen resident Cindy Nodine does her best to beat the cold despite temperatures hovering near zero as she takes her eight-year-old Alaskan Malamute named Atka for a walk along the Pumpkinvine Nature Trail near Abshire Park on Monday afternoon. Despite the sub-freezing temperatures, Nodine insists that Atka loves going for walks and playing in weather like this. According to meteorologist Mark Frazier of the National Weather Service, based in Syracuse, much of northern Indiana experienced record or near record lows on Sunday night. This included record lows of -9 in Fort Wayne and -14 in South Bend. Frazier explained that the cause of the unusually bitter cold temperatures the area is experiencing is due to an arctic high pressure system that has moved into and settled over the area. The weather service expects temperatures across northern Indiana to rebound in the coming days as the high pressure system moves on, with highs in the lower 30s by midweek and possibly higher by the holiday weekend.
