In spite of warmer than normal daily temperatures, diehard fishermen have been able to find ice to fish through at a channel at Syracuse, practicing for when ice really forms on the lakes. Pictured at right is Howard Smeltzer, Syracuse, holding a small bass he pulled from the Chinese Garden channel Wednesday. With him are John McKinley, 119 W. Brooklyn, Syracuse, at left and Paul Noens, Edwardsburg, Mich., center. About half a dozen brave fishermen were perched on the three-inch ice in the channel Wednesday. Thin ice has formed on some still water, but lakes remain ice-free because of the warm weather.
